What is Freedom?

Malcolm X said that you cannot separate peace from freedom because no one can be at peace unless he has his freedom. Many people want to have freedom, but they cannot even explain what freedom is. So, what is freedom? Was Malcolm right?

Is freedom directly related to peace? Is it impossible for people to have peace in their life without freedom? Imagine, if you were a North Korean, you would not be able to move to a new house or travel abroad, if you didn’t get a green light from your government. Additionally, you might be one of the North Koreans that die of hunger every day. Your child might be one of the North Korean children that has to go to the mountains to seek the bark of a tree every winter for their daily meal. You would be dependent upon South Korea and the United Nations to send North Korea food such as wheat flour and rice in order to survive. Every day you would worry that some cruel person might kidnap your children to eat them or to sell them to another country. Would you have peace? Would you be willing to start a revolution to get this peace? With freedom there is a much greater chance for peace.

What is the reason behind Egypt’s recent riots? There is no peace in Egypt because there is no freedom. Egyptians aspire to gain their own freedom in order to have the potential to change their society. They are tired of facing critical situations that place unbearable burdens on them. In history, there are a lot of cases in which people have tried to change the society after being forced to follow the contradictory obligations of indifferent rulers. Every human has the right to pursue freedom because this natural right paves the way for human dignity and happiness. The lack of this essential freedom means the lack of peace in each person’s life. To have this peace, the right to pursue freedom should be guaranteed to all human beings. If every human being is not free to enjoy life, that is to have a job and food to eat, their lives are similar to a burning inferno and this person does not have peace.

In conclusion, freedom is very much related to peace. As we have seen from the foregoing examples, many people want freedom if they do not have peace. This simple principle is evidenced by the recent uprisings throughout the Middle East according to daily news reports. In order to have peace, there must be freedom.
